Questioning candidates who are seeking your vote on their stance on ALPRs is an important way to indicate what you want for your community.
Ask these of every candidate on your ballot — incumbent or challenger. Fill in the [bracketed phrases] with your own municipality, county, or state before you ask. These questions were inspired by https://noalprs.com/election-toolkit.html.
Question 1
Within your first six months in office, will you lead an investigation into the operations of real time crime centers and fusion centers in [insert your city/town, county, or state here] and how this surveillance infrastructure intensifies policing of criminalized people and violates constitutional rights?
Question 2
If you are elected, will you support a ban on the use of automated license plate readers? Are you supportive of banning other surveillance technologies? What other surveillance technologies do you support banning? If you are not willing to support a ban, how will you protect the rights of your constituents from being violated by police use of surveillance technologies?
Question 3
If elected, what will you do to educate your constituents in [insert your city/town, county, or state here] on the impact of surveillance technologies, including ALPRs, drones, body-worn cameras, digital spyware, and fusion centers, among other tools and infrastructure?
Question 4
If elected, will you call for an audit of all public spending to document all of the surveillance technologies used in [insert city/town, county, or state] and how much these tools are costing taxpayers? Will you also call for an audit of all the surveillance technology data sharing to document all of the agencies, vendors, and third parties that have access to local data, especially federal policing agencies, and an audit of grants, especially federal funds, used to acquire surveillance technologies?
